Speech of the President Atifete Jahjaga at the “Walk against Breast Cancer”

We have gathered this year as well in order to raise awareness about one of the most difficult diseases we face, the breast cancer.

Our traditional manifestation, walk against breast cancer, gathers more and more supporters each year in its task of awareness rising about this illness which touches upon both women and men.

Breast cancer can touch upon anyone of us, irrespective of social status or ethnic background, and even though this illness is one of the deadliest types of cancer in women, it can also affect men.

Advances in the field of medicine are making breast cancer an illness which can be cured, if detected early enough.

Early diagnosis is an opportunity to win over the disease, it is an opportunity for life, and hence we must exercises the necessary attention to it.

Our dear friend, who has very often emotionalized us with characters she has played, Ms. Leze Qena, shares with us her valuable experience, which I hope you will all utilize.

Ms. Qena says that she undertakes regular medical checkups every year, on her birthday. This year, give yourselves the same gift on your birthday.

Regular checkups, self checks and visits at the specialized medical centres are life saving.  For this reason, I call upon you to pay the necessary attention to your health, by making regular medical checks a routine part of your life.

Dear girls, it is never too early to look after your health. Dear mothers, sister, find time to look after yourselves, as you do look after your beloved ones, with a medical check-up.

Only a few days ago, together with the Minister of Health, we visited the Oncology Clinic, we saw the positive improvements in healthcare services offered to the citizens of our country, and we discussed the remaining needs in order to provide more qualitative services in accordance with the needs of our citizens with latest medical advances.

I would like to reiterate, offering of healthcare services, by a specialised and trained personnel, utilizing advanced equipment and in conformity with highest European and international standards remains our ambition.

Breast cancer is a distress of a global level, faced by population of even most advanced countries, but its lethality rates are being slowed down with technological advances, medical innovations, and at the same time with awareness rising of citizens in relation to this illness.

In our country, Ms. Nafije Latifi continues to remain a strong voice in raising of our awareness through her Centre for fighting of breast cancer. I would like to express a special appreciation to the incessant endeavours of Ms. Nafije Latifi, who has for many years, advocated on general sensibilisation of the society, and has remained vigilant and has demanded that institutions offer services to every citizen of the country.

Ms. Latifi, your will and determination to fight this disease is an inspiration for all those touched by cancer. Furthermore, your fight for awareness has turned into an important partnership with the society and institutions. Dear friend, thank you, you will always have my unsparing support.

Dear friends, and family members,

Facing breast cancer is not easy, but you must not give up at anyone moment. Have the will and determination to fight this disease, love life, as your family members love you, who stand by your side with stoic devotion, in order to challenge this disease together.

Life is the most important thing, pay attention to your health, undertake regular medical checkups. Early diagnosis is an opportunity for life.
