PRESIDENT ATIFETE JAHJAGA’S SPEECH AT THE WOMEN AND ACCESS TO PROPERTY AND RESOURCES CONFERENCE

Republic of Kosovo is a state built upon civic principles, where everyone, irrespective of ethnicity, religion or gender, enjoys all the same rights and freedoms.

Honourable deputies of the Parliament of the Republic of Kosovo,
Honourable representatives of the Government of the Republic of Kosovo,
Honourable representatives of the Embassies accredited to the Republic of Kosovo,
Honourable representatives of the Civil Society,
Honourable representatives of the international organizations in Kosovo,
Ladies and Gentlemen,

Republic of Kosovo is a state built upon civic principles, where everyone, irrespective of ethnicity, religion or gender, enjoys all the same rights and freedoms.

Position of the women and their freedoms determine the level of democratization of the society and preconditions for a proper development in the future.

Women in Kosovo, are increasingly advancing towards their equality with men, by enhancing the scope of attainment of their natural, constitutional and legal rights, by holding important positions in decision making, representation and leading posts in various fields, as in traditional  fields of education and healthcare, as well as in what is becoming a new characteristic of post war Kosovo, women are holding important posts in business, thus leading and contributing towards the development and progress of the country.

The experience so far shows that women are much less than men involved in organised crime, corruption and other negative phenomena.

The advancement of the position of women means the consolidation of general trends and advancement of democratic processes because it ensures the implementation of all human rights and freedoms and ensures healthy relations in the family.

Women in our country lag behind in realisation of the right to property as a consequence of the customary tradition and traditional relations within the Kosovar families and Kosovar society.

Today, we have adopted all the necessary laws in compliance with the European normative and standards and all that is left is to implement them. Women must realize in full their right to property, because that is the only way that a woman can become a good mother, a good wife and an equal citizen, completely equal to her husband and able to take upon herself all the responsibilities.

A Woman that own the property, not only that feel more secure, but through the administration of the property become a devoted entrepreneur that acts and works in accordance with market rules and manages the capital by utilising for her own development, as well as the development of her families and of the society. Women who are owners of all types of material goods break the taboos of the past by substantiating the fact that God has created us all equal and that women are as capable as men in all regards.

The fact that women as entrepreneurs have participated in very low numbers in the privatisation process is not a commendable one as there are no women on managerial posts of privatised companies.

We must all work harder to create a more accommodating environment, which will accept these new values surrounding the role of the woman.

None of us can remain satisfied if women are excluded or prevented from the right to inheritance, or if they are deemed less worthy than men towards their right to inheritance. We all understand by now that equality of women in society, ascertained in various fields, is a benefit that has not been present in our society, but that today we all understand it to be a fundamental right that leads the society forward and by realisation of the rights and liberties of the women, all of the society stands to benefit.

Advancement of the rights of women, as is being demonstrated world wide, is leading the economic development of the country and the general development of the society.
