The President: Hero Abdullah Tahiri was an inspirational name for many freedom fighters

Prishtina, May 24, 2019 – The President of the Republic of Kosovo, Hashim Thaçi, attended today the Memorial Academy for hero Abdullah Tahiri.

President Thaçi said that we are commemorating a prominent activist of the National Movement, who fell short before the liberation of Kosovo, 20 years ago.

He stressed that throughout this week in the center of our attention was one of the most inhumane crimes and massacres that took place in Kosovo, the Dubrava massacre.

“The state of Serbia, intentionally and premeditated, had gathered a large number of prisoners of war in the prison of Dubrava with the purpose of killing and eliminating them. Abdullah Tahiri and 160 other prisoners, empty-handed and handcuffed, 20 years ago were cruelly killed by Serbian police forces only because they were Albanians who loved the freedom of their country”, he said.

President Thaçi said that after two decades, none of the orderers and executors of this massacre were brought in front of the local or international justice.

The Head of State said that these crimes will not be forgotten and will never vanish, while for the imprisonment, punishment and execution of fellow-compatriot Abdullah Tahiri, he has said that it was not accidental.

“At the end of World War II, Gjilan with its surroundings, like entire Kosovo, was hit hard in the period of the military administration, where the face of the Yugoslav communist regime was revealed. Against the Yugoslav oppressive regime, as an awakened national conscience, Gjilan gave important patriotic and nationalistic figures. It were Mullah Idriz Gjilani, Kadri Halimi, Kadri Zeka, Rexhep Mala, Nuhi Berisha, in different historical periods, who with their lives and sacrifice kept alive the ideal of the liberation of Kosova”, he added.

President Thaçi emphasized that it was an entire pleiad of political prisoners who were distinguished throughout the decades of the second half of the 20th century as distinguished patriots and activists.

According to him, Abdullah Tahiri had adopted this political spirit and this right national orientation from an early age, being active in organizing the 1981 demonstrations as a student.

The President also spoke about the controversial element of Yugoslavia, which, according to him, led to the break out of the demonstrations that shook the foundations of Belgrade’s politics.

“The growth of the national consciousness of the generation of '81, in the general political context, was another indicator and argument that the status of autonomy was insufficient for Kosovo. The demand for the Republic of Kosovo had turned into a national ideal. Thus, the intelligence created after the opening of the University of Prishtina could not be alienated by the Yugoslav ideology and fake brotherhood and unity”, he said.

The Head of State said that Abdullah Tahiri is a typical figure and result of the political and national emancipation of those generations who disagreed with the politics of Belgrade and the Communist Union of Kosovo, and after the appearance of the Kosovo Liberation Army, Abdullah Tahiri commenced the first steps of organizing its structures in Gjilan.

President Thaçi has said that being a prominent activist, Tahiri was imprisoned by the Serb police and in this manner the haste of an upcoming commander of the Kosovo Liberation Army was brought to an end.

“Abdullah Tahiri became an inspirational name for many freedom fighters throughout Kosovo. Due to the blood of the martyrs, the sacrifice of the martyrs, the resistance of the people, the fair fight of the Kosovo Liberation Army, the support of the democratic world, led by the United States of America and the NATO intervention, Kosovo became free country”, he said.

Taking into consideration the great and continued contribution of Abdullah Tahiri, the ideals for which he was imprisoned and his resistance and sacrifice, the President of state, Hashim Thaçi, two years ago had honored Abdullah Tahiri with the Order “Hero of Kosovo”.
