President Thaçi: The political parties must unite for the interests of the country

Prishtina, March 21, 2017 – The President of the Republic of Kosovo, Hashim Thaçi, took part today at the launching of the program of the Westminster Foundation for Democracy in Kosovo.

President Thaçi said that this is an important step for the Westminster Foundation for Democracy itself, for the political parties, the political life and for entire Kosovo.

“Unlike from the past when we needed support in the reconstruction of the country from the war, today we need more specific support from the international community. Today we need support on projects for the empowerment of democracy in Kosovo, for the empowerment of the political pluralism of the generations to come”, said President Thaçi.

The President said that the Westminster Foundation for Democracy has worked on the promotion of the pluralism of ideas, multi-party democracy and on the principle for political battles to be developed on policies, ideologies or ideas in general and not to be struggles on personalities or between personalities.

“Since the beginning of taking the office of the President of the Republic of Kosovo I have promoted the idea of the decriminalization of the political parties in Kosovo. More precisely, I have presented the idea for political parties in Kosovo to build a code of conduct between the parties themselves, which means that people who are being investigated or are accused by the justice authorities will not be allowed to even enter the lists for MPs nor take posts in public institutions”, said president Thaçi.

This step, according to the President, would help to strengthen the confidence of the citizens of Kosovo in the political parties themselves, in their aspiration to work for the interests of Kosovo and its citizens.

“The political parties, especially the new generations of politicians of Kosovo, will certainly benefit from the projects of the Westminster Foundation for Democracy”, stated President Thaçi.

He added that the gained experiences will be vital for the democratic future of Kosovo, to educate new generations of politicians on diplomacy and politics in general.

“More precisely, this means that the new generations of politicians to encounter on policies, on ideas, on ideologies … and not to enter into conflict because of personalities or individuals. As a society we need to further develop the practice of the confrontation of policies and ideas”, said President Thaçi.

Only by confronting our ideas, our vision, the President said that we will find the best path for Kosovo.

“The political parties in Kosovo have shown that despite the disagreements between them, however, when it comes to important decisions for Kosovo, then they are able to gather and coordinate their actions”, he said.

President Thaçi said that Kosovo is in front of important decisions, which require coordination of our actions.

These, according to President Thaçi, are also moments when the political parties must demonstrate political maturity and prove once again that the political class in Kosovo can look beyond their own political and party interests and to decide what is the best for Kosovo and its citizens.

Also present at the launching of the program of the Westminster Foundation for Democracy in Kosovo were the British Ambassador Ruairí O'Connell, and the Ambassador of the OSCE, Jan Braathu.
