President Thaçi: The European Union will be complete only when the Western Balkans is part of it

Prishtina, April 16, 2018 – The President of the Republic of Kosovo, Hashim Thaçi, received today the Prime Minister of the Republic of Bulgaria, Boyko Borissov, with whom he discussed about the deepening of relations between the two states and about the European perspective of Kosovo and the countries of Southeastern Europe.

President Thaçi has said that the presence of Prime Minister Borissov in Kosovo is a double honour for us because, apart from the fact that he represents the friend state of Bulgaria, at the same time he represents the Bulgarian EU presidency.

“We discussed about the European path of Kosovo, of the countries of the Western Balkans, and the bilateral relations between our two countries”, stated President Thaçi.

“The European Union will be complete only when Kosovo and the entire Southeast Europe are part of it. This means not only peace and stability, but also an increase in overall welfare”, he said.

The Head of State also talked about the new strategy of the European Commission for the Western Balkan countries, where the perspective of all Western Balkan countries is reiterated.

He thanked the Bulgarian Prime Minister for the extraordinary work and dedication of Bulgaria as Chair of the EU Presidency, which rightly puts the right importance to enlargement, putting it as one of the priorities.

Speaking about the dialogue process for the normalization of relations between Kosovo and Serbia, President Thaçi said that Kosovo demands not only to continue dialogue with Serbia, but also to turn it into a genuine reconciliation and sustainable peace-building  process in the region.

Whereas, the Prime Minister of Bulgaria, Boyko Borissov, stressed that building peace and stability is for the benefit of all sides, and the entire Southeast Europe belongs in the European Union.

“The European Union is open to the countries of Southeast Europe. Of course, these countries must meet the conditions that the EU has put for membership”, stated Prime Minister Borissov.

Speaking about the region’s development, the Bulgarian Prime Minister emphasized the need to build the infrastructure that would better connect Southeast Europe countries with each other and with the entire continent.

“By building the infrastructure, we help the development and peace in the region”, said Prime Minister Borissov.

President Thaçi added that the Sofia Summit will be a good opportunity for the whole region.

“The Sofia Summit is a unique opportunity between the EU and the Western Balkans”, said President Thaçi.
