President Thaçi: Science must be in function of the economic and social development

Prishtina, May 15th, 2018 – President of the republic of Kosovo, Hashim Thaçi, has attended the opening of the Science Week event, organized for the tenth time by the Ministry of Education and Technology.

President Thaçi said that he is pleased that the Science Week has started at the time when Kosovo became and independent and sovereign state.

“Scientific research is considered to be the most powerful tool of the advancement of human knowledge and of the economic and social development. Hence, your human, scientific and cultural potential as scholars, is a strong support for all processes through which our state goes through. I follow with great care, as much as I can and I have time for, most of scientific activities, scientific research and your activities not only advances in selected fields, but also economic and social development. For this reason, honourable scientists,  the society expects from you to determine not just the present, but to also clearly define where are we going to be two to three decades from now, in the future”, stated President Thaçi.

The head of state also said that just turning out graduates is not sufficient in order to follow the regional trends, we also need to move faster better and in a more qualitative manner than the rest.

“I am convinced that there is a direct connection between economic growth and increase in the quality of education. Only with such a vision can we strengthen the energy of our talented youth”, said the President.

He also stressed that if we analyse the most developed countries of the world, we will see that in all of them, the key of their success was the quality of their human resources.

“What differentiates the developed countries from those in development as is the case with us, is the fact that the developed countries have great educational systems and competitive and skilled personnel on the global labour market. So, in this context, no country can pretend to develop in sustainable manner, without serious investment in human capital” added the President.

During these 19 years in freedom and 10 years of independence, according to President Thaçi, our priority has been the compensation fo decades of continuous discrimination and repression of the past.

“We had basic needs, in building of a modern educational infrastructure all around the country, and I can say, without undue modesty, that the educational infrastructure in Kosovo is the best in the region. We have already fulfilled these basic needs, and the time has come to concentrate more on quality, on investments in social capital, in human resources”, stated President Thaçi.

According to the head of state, we live in a constantly changing world and in this digital world of information technology, teachers and students alike can make our citizens, in a short period of time, be proud to live in this country.

“It is not just the politicians those who should be accountable on all issues, It is you too. We have as an obligation, as a state, as institutions, to continuously help you.  But it is you, who also need to help the policies and institutions”, stated President Thaçi.

At the Science Week, President Thaçi also said that we expect from the scientists to express their ideas and views on scientific achievements and ambitions for the future, by providing new scientific energies which promise reforms on access to knowledge and science in accordance with the requirements of the new European reality.

Taking into consideration the achievements, but also the challenges, President Thaçi said that it is a requirement to compile a list of priorities in all fields of research potential such as human resources, energy and environment, agriculture and food, medical research, studies of economy, humanistic sciences , IT and other fields as well.
