President Thaçi received Assistant Secretary Mitchell, they talk about the Euro-Atlantic perspective of Kosovo

Prishtina, March 12, 2018 – The President of the Republic of Kosovo, Hashim Thaçi, received today the US Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, Wess Mitchell.

At a joint press conference with Assistant Secretary Mitchell, President Thaçi said that the United States of America have been, are and will remain a strategic partner of the Republic of Kosovo, with a permanent friendship and special relations.

He thanked the new American administration for the special attention it is devoting to Kosovo and the entire Western Balkans.

“I informed Mr. Mitchell about the new opportunities and our commitment, our dedication, of all the institutions of the Republic of Kosovo, to conclude the demarcation issue with Montenegro as soon as possible, so that Kosovo can make this crucial step for visa liberalization. No one has any reason to delay the voting of the demarcation in the Assembly of Kosovo, be it Albanian parties or those of the communities, because it is a strategic and state interest”, stated President Thaçi.

President Thaçi said that with Assistant Secretary Mitchell they also discussed about the “further steps that the KSF will undertake in meeting the necessary criteria for the establishment of the Armed Forces of Kosovo as a new, multi-ethnic, professional force, composed of all communities and in the service of peace and stability”, as a prerequisite for NATO membership.

The Head of State has said that Kosovo is committed to good neighborly relations and strengthening the European perspective for all Western Balkan states.

Whereas, US Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, Wess Mitchell, said that the United States of America are for a multi-ethnic and democratic Kosovo and reengage in the support of its Euro-Atlantic path.

“We will have an active role in the year ahead and we also talked about the cooperation between Kosovo and the United States in the field of security, economy, energy and in particular about the good cooperation we have with Kosovo in confronting terrorism and the fight against ISIS”, said Assistant Secretary Mitchell.

He added that Kosovo has achieved much during these 10 years in building credible institutions, showing an economic growth and a deep transformation of the economy.

President Thaçi and Assistant Secretary Mitchell also talked about the importance for Kosovo to be engaged in the dialogue with Serbia, about the importance of ratifying the borderline agreement with Montenegro, about the transformation of the KSF through constitutional amendments, about the rule of law and the importance of the ongoing fight against corruption, in order to secure a Euro-Atlantic future, with even greater economic growth.
