President Thaçi: No compromise to be made with the law on behalf of daily political loyalty

Prishtina, April 08, 2019 – The President of the Republic of Kosovo, Hashim Thaçi, participated today in the ceremony marking the 11th Anniversary of the Constitution Day of the Republic of Kosovo

The Head of State said that on the basis of this Constitution, citizens are determined to build a future of Kosovo as a free, democratic and peace-loving country, which will be homeland of all its citizens.

“The Constitution of Kosovo clearly defines the basis and framework of its state building and functioning”, he said.

President Thaçi emphasized that even today Kosovo pledges to strengthen the multiethnic society, while a few months ago our institutions implemented another constitutional and legal obligation, the establishment of the Kosovo Army.

“A multiethnic army and on the basis of NATO standards, which in the near future will function not in a partial manner but in every corner of the territory of the Republic of Kosovo”, he said.

The Head of State invited the Government of Kosovo, that without hesitation and unequivocally, to respect the legality in every sphere of institutional life throughout Kosovo.

“No compromise with the law to occur on behalf of ethnic affiliation or daily political loyalty. Observance of the Constitution takes full effect only when sovereignty and legality are respected throughout the entire territory of Kosovo. All are equal before the law. Only those who respect the law can be in Kosovo’s institutions”, he said.

President Thaçi has added that Kosovo has also made progress in the international sphere.

“It has built good neighborly relations and has concluded the demarcation with Macedonia, Montenegro and Albania. The Kosovo-Serbia relationship remains a hope for a better future”, he stressed.

According to President Thaçi, this can be achieved when the international community will be unique in relation to Kosovo, Serbia and the Western Balkans, and not speaking with many voices and different tactical interests that challenge the strategic interest for Kosovo’s Euro-Atlantic future and beyond.

“Like in the past, today as well, the international community can contribute to Kosovo’s political and institutional unification. No one should expect for the opposite to happen”, he said.

President Thaçi has listed the basic principles of the Constitution of Kosovo, which must be respected, namely fully respecting the rule of law through its legislative and executive institutions, the sovereignty, equality before law, the use of languages, the use and respecting the symbols of all ethnicities, ethnic and civic equality values, cultural and religious heritage of all ethnicities, the strengthening of economy, freedom of movement, freedom of expression, respecting the separation of powers and other rights.

At the end, President Thaçi congratulated all citizens on the 11th Anniversary of the Constitution, thanking the international friends, the USA and the EU that helped us in the drafting and implementation of this Constitution
