President Thaçi joins world leaders at the Panama Canal expansion inauguration ceremony

Panama City, June 27th, 2016 – President of the Republic of Kosovo, Hashim Thaçi joined dozens of world leaders to attend the historic Panama Canal expansion inauguration ceremony.

On this occasion, President Thaçi said that Kosovo’s participation in this event, along with other countries of the world, strengthens the international presence and subjectivity of our country.

“The invitation to attend the biggest event of Central America and South America is evidence that Kosovo is strengthening its international subjectivity and consolidating its position on the international stage more and more each day”, President Thaçi said.

During the inauguration ceremony, President Thaçi held many meetings with his counterparts from the countries of Central and South America.

President Thaçi also met with representatives of countries that have not yet formally recognized the independence of Kosovo, asking them to take the decision on its recognition as soon as possible, to join 111 countries of the world who have done so.

“I met with presidents, prime ministers and representatives of countries from Latin America who have not recognized us. There is a very optimistic spirit to move towards a faster recognition of Kosovo, even among countries that have so far been reluctant to recognize its statehood”, he added.

President of the Republic of Kosovo, Hashim Thaçi said that Kosovo is being represented in every corner of the world, alongside the most powerful countries in the world. Presidents, prime ministers and foreign Ministers from 60 countries from all around the world have attended the inauguration ceremony.

The Panama Canal was opened to traffic 102 years ago. To accommodate large ships of the XXI century, the old canal has been expanded, and a new lane of the canal was added. The inauguration ceremony of the new lane of the canal was held on Sunday, June 26th.
