President Thaçi in Berlin: The EU with double standards, blocks cooperating states, rewards blackmailing states

Berlin, December 06, 2019 – The President of the Republic of Kosovo, Hashim Thaçi, at the conference organized by the East-West Institute, as the main panelist has spoken about the dialogue process between Kosovo and Serbia.

President Thaçi said that exactly when the NATO summit was being held in London, the Serbian President traveled to Russia and this is a message of their orientation.

“This is a message of Serbia’s orientation. Also, during the previous day we have heard statements from Serbian leaders denying the crimes and the genocide in Kosovo”, said President Thaçi.

The Head of State has said in Berlin that the relations of Kosovo with Serbia do not affect only the bilateral affect not only the bilateral plane, but also the stability of the region and the EU.

Speaking about the Euro-Atlantic perspective of the Western Balkan states, President Thaçi has stressed that Kosovo should receive visa liberalization as soon as possible.

“We do not see this as a gift, but it is something that Kosovo deserves and has met the criteria to receive it. Secondly, the opening of negotiations with North Macedonia and Albania should take place in the near future. The blocking of negotiations was a bad message for the entire Western Balkans”, said President Thaçi.

In front of many US and EU state representatives and civil society representatives, President Thaçi has said that we are witnessing that the EU has double standards.

“While Kosovo is being blocked in liberalization and Macedonia and Albania are being blocked in negotiations, to Serbia, the opening of new chapters has been promised. We are witnessing that the ones who are being rewarded are the ones who are blackmailing the EU with the relationship with Russia”, he said.

According to President Thaçi, when the talks started in 2012, one of the unwritten rules was that we would not condition the process, and now the tax is being used to condition the dialogue.

“How to move forward? From the experience in the process so far I would like to mention two things. First, the unity of the Quint states, which is key for keeping the process moving forward. And second, full US and EU coordination, even though this coordination doesn’t mean much when EU countries are not bothered of what the EU decides. Some of them even cause a lot of confusion in our states, both to politicians and the citizens”, said President Thaçi.

He added that these are the conditions for restarting the process and reaching a final agreement, while dialogue and the final agreement, according to him, have no alternative to Balkan stability.

President Thaçi also spoke about the electoral process in Kosovo and the efforts to create a new government.

He said that Kosovo has successfully passed a test of democracy, regardless of the election result.

“The winning party must start to form the government. I would like to emphasize that every process with Serbia will be dealt with at the level of both sovereign states and with political consensus in Kosovo. I am President and will invest in reaching the internal consensus in Kosovo. Polarizations do not stop in a pluralistic system, but the time has come to have a set of priorities between the position and the opposition, in order not to have any differences in these issues”, he said.

The Head of State has pledged that as the President of the state he will play his part in unifying the political scene.
