President Thaçi calls for the conviction of Serbian criminals who committed genocide in Kosovo

Prishtina, 17 January 2020 – The President of the Republic of Kosovo, Hashim Thaçi, attended today the Annual Conference of Kosovo Prosecutors.

While praising prosecutors on their work and encouraging them to professionalism and independence from outside influences, President Thaçi has also spoken about the non-conviction of Serbian criminals who have committed macabre crimes against the civilian population in Kosovo.

President Thaçi has emphasized that Kosovo has gone through various justice systems for over 20 years now, while expressing his concern over the lack of justice for war victims.

President Thaçi has mentioned the rule of law missions that have been in Kosovo, including UNMIK, EULEX and, parallel to them, the Hague Tribunal for war crimes in the former Yugoslavia, which, he said, have not done enough to convict Serbia's criminals for mass murders for the purpose of ethnic cleansing or for the rape of over 20,000 Albanian women.

This negligence constitutes an amnesty of these crimes by international justice, according to President Thaçi.

“We are witnesses that there are about 13 thousand Albanian civilians murdered by Serbia, about 20,000 women raped and about 1300 children murdered, as well as about 400 recorded massacres. We all know and no one can deny that there were omissions in the process of prosecuting the culprits, as there has been an ethnic-based selection where Kosovo, despite being a victim, has been more prosecuted and investigated than Serbia, which was the aggressor that committed genocide and ethnic cleansing. I can freely say that Kosovo more has been more investigated than the crimes of World War II”, said President Thaçi.

The head of state said has said that these omissions have made it difficult to achieve peace, reconciliation and normalization of relations between Kosovo and Serbia.

President Thaçi has encouraged prosecutors not to be affected by the political influence and the diplomatic influence.
