PRESIDENT SEJDIU’S SPEECH HELD DURING THE CEREMONY OF UNVEILING PRESIDENT CLINTON’S STATUTE IN PRISHTINA

Our vision is a Kosovo integrated into the European Union, NATO and other international institutions. We are convinced that we will never lack Your support in our efforts to accomplish this objective, like we never did so far, neither at the times of our great Movement for freedom, democracy and independence, which was led by Kosovo’s historic President, Dr. Ibrahim Rugova, nor at the times of KLA liberation war, nor at present, in our great battle for developing an independent, sovereign and democratic Kosovo.

Prishtina, 1 November 2009
Honorable President Clinton,
Honorable Speaker of Republic of Kosovo’s Parliament, Mr. Krasniqi
Honorable Prime Minister Thaçi,
Honorable US Ambassador to Kosovo, Mr. Christopher Dell,
Dear citizens of Prishtina and people of Republic of Kosovo,

It is a special honor for the capital of the Republic of Kosovo and for our whole country to inaugurate President Clinton’s statute today.
You have honored all of us with your participation in this solemnity, President Clinton, and it is by way of this symbolic token that we want to express, once again, our gratitude to you and to your country, the United States of America.
In the darkest moments when Kosovo and its people were in danger of a total physical annihilation, you took leadership role in world’s democratic and freedom-loving countries’ undertaking to stop Milosevic’s paramilitary, police and military machinery, which was expelling our people from their homes with an unseen brutality.
Dear President Clinton,
Kosovo gained its freedom owing to Your great support and sublime sacrifices made by our people. Now, when our state enjoys the recognition of 62 countries around the globe, we reaffirm our commitment to make Kosovo a homeland cherished by all its citizens, regardless of their ethnicity or religion, a country which shall have a thorough respect of each community and individual’s cultural and spiritual values and heritage.
Kosova is a small country which is facing various economic and social difficulties. But, at the same time, Kosova abounds in mineral resources. It has a fertile soil and an educated youth, what constitutes a strong guarantee that a brighter future is awaiting us.

Honorable President Clinton,
Dear participants,

The unveiling of this statute happened to coincide with the first municipal elections to be held following the declaration of Kosova’s independence. We believe that Your visit to Kosovo will constitute a strong incentive to all Kosova’s citizens and political parties to provide for a successful conclusion of these elections. We know that the entire world will turn their eyes toward our country on November 15. Therefore, like today, we want a spirit of peace, tolerance and joy to prevail on that day. A peaceful and dignified conclusion of these elections, which are important to our country, would be the best present for our many friends around the world, for the United States of America, for the European Union and for all other world democracies that have helped us in our revival.
15 November elections are a good opportunity for Kosova to show the world that it is able and ready to build free and democratic institutions, accountable to the people, the real sovereign in Kosovo.

By thanking You once again, Honorable President, I wish that this statute shall live for long, like the friendship between our two countries, the United States and Kosovo, which shall live forever!

God Bless the United States of America!
God Bless the Republic of Kosova!
