President Sejdiu welcomes Republic of Kosovo’s accession to World Bank

Republic of Kosovo’s President Dr. Fatmir Sejdiu has welcomed today the accession of our country to the World Bank, a decision taken on Wednesday by the World Bank Board of Governors by majority of votes.

Accession to the World Bank follows Republic of Kosovo’s accession to the International Monetary Fund and the adoption of the law on accession to these institutions by the Parliament of Kosovo.

President Sejdiu considered Republic of Kosovo’s accession to the World Bank an important and historic event and thanked the World Bank’s Board of Governors for deciding in favour of our country’s accession to this major world financial institution.

He said that accession to the World Bank and he IMF will provide our country with new opportunities for an overall growth and prosperity and will enable it to face the challenges that arise as a consequence of the global financial crisis more easily.
The President also maintained that it is very important to note that 100 states have voted in favour of Kosovo’s accession to the World Bank, a number that outnumbers the number of states that have voted in favour of Kosovo’s accession to the IMF. This indicates that a number of states that have not recognised the Republic of Kosovo yet have voted in favour of Kosovo’s accession, while the voting for accession to these two international financial institutions is another sign that these states will recognise the Republic of Kosovo in the near future.
