Highest state institutions assure Republic of Kosovo’s Police of their support

The President of the Republic of Kosovo, Dr. Fatmir Sejdiu, and the Prime Minister Hashim Thaçi, visited today the Kosovo Police Directorate, where they were received by General Sheremet Ahmeti.

The President of the Republic of Kosovo, Dr. Fatmir Sejdiu, said that the visit to the Kosovo Police Directorate today aimed at reaffirming their unwavering support to the Kosovo Police as well as their commitment to provide for its professionalism in conformity with modern standards.

“Together with the Prime Minister today we visited the Chief of Kosovo Police General Ahmeti and his colleagues to reaffirm, first of all, our acknowledgment as country’s institutions for the work that they are doing and for the work that lies ahead of them in terms of their duty to do their utmost in building professional capacities of Kosovo Police and in ensuring the compliance with modern standards, though we have nothing else to say but words of praise for them as far as the improvement of quality of their services is concerned” – President Sejdiu said.

He said that responsibility for the theft that happened in Kosovo Police facilities of lies with all country’s institutions alike, but most with the Kosovo Police above all. However, he expressed his optimism that the Kosovo Police will maintain its commitment to preventing such cases from happening in the future.

“I also want to reaffirm our commitment to analyze, in an impartial manner, an element in its performance that may have constituted a shortcoming. The responsibility for the event which you know has occurred in Police facilities is borne by all the institutions of our country, but by the Police above all, though I believe that, by their engagement in this regard, they will succeed and they will manage to convey the message that the police is at the service of our country” – President Sejdiu added.

President Sejdiu that the Kosovo Police can by no means be associated with political evolutions, for it has a multiethnic character and it operates in a constant partnership with other regional and international institutions that contribute to peacekeeping and fight against organized crime.

“Kosovo Police can by no means be associated with political evolutions or political bias. It constitutes a police force that shall do its best in cooperating with all other partners that support our country, such as EULEX in this case, though, in terms of international cooperation, it will work closely with the neighboring countries in fighting organized crime and any other formation that aims at tarnishing the stability in our country by smuggling and other activities that are punishable by law” – President Sejdiu said.

During this meeting, they urged the police leadership to ensure equality of all before law and they said that they are going to require from other institutions, such as prosecutors’ offices and judiciary, to follow suit.

“Equality of all before law was what we asked for and we shall ask for the same from other people who are a part of our judiciary, including a better cooperation between the prosecutors’ offices and judiciary, so as to increase the responsive efficiency of our state, but never with the aim of creating a political policing system or a police state, but, on the contrary, with the aim of creating a police that will be at the service of our country by adhering to the best principles of democracy” – President Sejdiu pointed out.

Prime Minister Hashim Thaçi also stated that the aim of the visit was to assure Kosovo Police of their support.

“The aim of President Sejdiu’s and my visit was to assure Kosovo Police of our support to building its professional capability, for we all take pride of the work that they have done by retaining high professional standards and by giving a good example in the region” – Prime Minister Thaçi said.

On the other hand, expressing his appreciation to our country’s institutions and people for their continuous support, the Kosovo Police Director General Sheremet Ahmeti pledged that the Kosovo Police will always be at the service of all the people of our country.

“We welcome the visit and we consider it was absolutely needed. We do enjoy the support of the institutions of our country and the support of the President and the Prime Minister to our mission. Their suggestions represent a challenge for us. We will maintain our engagement in being at the service of the people of our country and in ensuring their safety. In general terms, we are doing a god job in supporting the people and both national and international institutions” – General Sheremet Ahmeti maintained.
