PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF KOSOVO

President Jahjaga’s speech at the commemorative ceremony held for the assassinated EULEX Staff Member

We are gathered here in grief to commemorate and to remember a devoted member of the European Union’s rule of law mission in Kosovo, a dear colleague and to many of you, a close friend. As the President of Kosovo, I am here to pay tribute to Audrius’s dedication and to convey the support of Kosovo’s citizens to the commitment of the members of EULEX to see that the rule of law prevails in the whole of Kosovo. We are all very saddened by this unfortunate loss and I want you to know that in this tragic moment we stand by each other and we will continue to stand in unity.

Honourable Speaker of the Parliament, Mr. Krasniqi,
Honourable Deputy Prime Minister Kuçi,
Honourable Deputy Prime Minister Petrovic,
Honourable Ambassadors and representatives of the diplomatic missions in the Republic of Kosovo,
Honourable EULEX members,
Dear Audrius family members,
Friends and Colleagues of Audrius.

We are gathered here in grief to commemorate and to remember a devoted
member of the European Union’s rule of law mission in Kosovo, a dear
colleague and to many of you, a close friend. As the President of
Kosovo, I am here to pay tribute to Audrius’s dedication and to convey
the support of Kosovo’s citizens to the commitment of the members of
EULEX to see that the rule of law prevails in the whole of Kosovo. We
are all very saddened by this unfortunate loss and I want you to know
that in this tragic moment we stand by each other and we will continue
to stand in unity.

I have condemned strongly the attack on the EULEX last week that led to
the this untimely death and I have received the assurances of Kosovo’s
institutions and its partners that no stone will be left unturned until
we find the perpetrators who committed this cowardly act. This was an
attack on our common values by destructive forces that want to stop
Kosovo’s progress, that want to reverse the numerous achievements that
we have accomplished together and that aim to sow mistrust and fear in
the hearts of Kosovo’s citizens who are working hard and making huge
sacrifices to transform our country in a better place.

It is tragic that to enliven this vision we mourn another death.

But Audrius trusted that we can make this great leap forward, and his
sacrifice to see that Kosovo becomes a country of great opportunities
shall never be forgotten.

Honourable Audrius’s family,

Please accept our most cordial condolences for this terrible loss. We
are with you at this time of sadness and we share the pain with you. We
will never be able to fill the void which your son has left in you, but
please rest assured that he will always remain in our minds and our
hearts.

Honourable EULEX members,

As we bid farewell to your beloved colleague, I want to assure you that
we are grateful for your tireless work and partnership. And I encourage
all of you, as individuals, as a mission, as friends to this country, to
recommit yourselves to helping Kosovo establish rule of law so that we
prevent tragedies such as this from ever happening again.

This is the best way to honour Audrius’s memory.
