The President: The Constitution is the foundation of our modern state

Prishtina, April 10, 2018 – The President of the Republic of Kosovo, Hashim Thaçi, took part in the solemn reception for the marking of the Constitution Day, organized by the Ministry of Justice.

President Thaçi has said that a decade ago we decided to build our future as a free, democratic and peace-loving country, which became home to all citizens.

“The day of the adoption of the Constitution was not only a legitimation of our statehood, but also implementation of an idea, of a project and of the dreams of many generations that were sacrificed and had worked for this day”, stated President Thaçi, adding that “that day marked our unstoppable journey to building a democratic state, where the owners are all citizens, without distinction of ethnicity and religious affiliation”.

The Head of State emphasized that the Constitution of Kosovo is among the most modern in Southeastern Europe and embodies the values of human rights, of equal citizens, guaranteeing civic freedoms and equality before the law.

“Today, just like ten years ago, it was not just a day of celebration, but also a day of pledge to build a state that will bring peace and long-term stability in Europe”, he stressed.

Ten years ago, according to President Thaçi, the Euro-Atlantic path was designed with the goal for the state of Kosovo to become a member of the EU and NATO.

“One decade is very little for a successful statebuilding, but enough to see the progress made in Kosovo’s case. The Constitution of Kosovo since the first day has been a source of civic and political consensus in our country. Therefore, the citizens of Kosovo, all institutions, have preserved and protected it as the main foundation of our state”, stated President Thaçi

The Head of State has said that in this decade of functioning the constitutional changes have also been necessary, as a need to strengthen our institutions and our statehood.

“I also want to use this opportunity to encourage all to develop an internal debate so that the decisions taken for constitutional changes to reflect on the overall good and social and political consensus”, said President Thaçi.

Among the major changes that, according to President Thaçi, await the citizens of Kosovo are also the necessary changes for the establishment of the Armed Forces of Kosovo, the inclusion of the Croatian and Montenegrin communities in the Constitution of Kosovo and the changes required to conclude the electoral reform.

The Head of State has also thanked the friend countries for the unreserved support and congratulated all those who, through their work, defend and strengthen the Constitution of Kosovo, the foundations of our state.

President Thaçi has also decorated the drafters of the Constitution of the Republic of Kosovo with the Presidential Jubilee Medal of the 10th Anniversary of the Independence.
