Sejdiu: The wheel of history can neither be stopped, nor rolled back

In a statement today, the President of the Republic of Kosovo, Dr. Fatmir Sejdiu, said that Russia’s approach to Kosovo is irrational. He said that Kosovo’s independence was based on firm grounds and, first of all, on the will of its people.

President Fatmir Sejdiu responded to the statements on Kosovo made by the Russian President Dmitry Medvedev during his visit to Belgrade today by saying that the wheel of history can neither be stopped, nor rolled back.

“The wheel of history can neither be stopped, nor rolled back. Kosovo’s independence is based on firm grounds and, first of all, on the will of its people, on the past developments that it went through as an integral part of a federation that saw its dissolution and on all other processes that ensued the humanitarian intervention to save the people of Kosovo from genocide, starting with building of democratic institutions and up to negotiations and Kosovo’s sui generis character in all respects. This is why we stand where we are today and Kosovo is independent” – President Sejdiu said.

President also mentioned Russia’s contribution in the past as a member of Contact Group and other mechanisms that were involved in negotiations on Kosovo and expressed his hope that Russia will change his approach to Kosovo in the future, reminding that Russia has supported a sustainable solution that would contribute to peace and stability and that the solution was the independence of the Republic of Kosovo.

Despite such opposing positions, President Sejdiu anticipated new recognitions and said that the establishment of diplomatic relations with Macedonia constituted a crucial step.

President Sejdiu made these comments today following a meeting with the new Finish Ambassador to Kosovo, Mrs. Tarja Laitiainen, who presented her credentials to the President and who offered her country’s support in Kosovo’s integration into the European Union.
