Sejdiu: Kosovo is committed to preserving the special friendship with the United States of America

The President of Republic of Kosovo, Dr. Fatmir Sejdiu and Prime Minister Thaçi received at a joint meeting today the American senators Mr. George V. Voinovich and Ms. Jeanne Shaheen, whom they thanked for the unwavering support that the United States of America and they personally have provided to our country.

“Republic of Kosovo appreciates the extraordinary support that the United States of America has provided to our country in its long-lasting struggle for freedom and independence”, President Sejdiu said. “The people and institutions of Kosovo” – President Sejdiu added – “are committed to preserving the special friendship with the United States of America and the American people.”

Speaking of development and achievements made in Kosovo on the second anniversary of independence, President Sejdiu said that Republic of Kosovo has left behind two important and successful years, though they had brought about numerous challenges.

“Republic of Kosovo has proven itself to be an important factor of peace and stability in the region and we are committed to maintaining our policy of neighborliness and cooperation with all our neighbors, including Serbia”, President Sejdiu declared. He also said that Kosovo is ready to cooperate and enter an open dialogue with Serbia on issues of mutual interest, such as economic operation, freedom of movement, combating organized crime, etc. in order to improve the welfare of the people of both countries. However, President Sejdiu affirmed that Kosovo will never discuss issues that may undermine the sovereignty and integrity of the state of Kosovo.

Prime Minister Thaçi also reaffirmed the willingness of the Government of Republic of Kosovo to foster neighborly relations and to cooperate with Serbia in fields of mutual interest. However, he maintained that Kosovo cannot boost this cooperation any further, as far as Serbia remains unwilling to cooperate and, besides this, hampers uses all the means available to hamper the participation of Kosovo representatives in various international forums and conferences.

“Serbian representatives have often abandoned various international meeting halls, as a sign of protest against participation of representatives of Republic of Kosovo”, Prime Minister Thaçi reminded.

On the other hand, Senators George V. Voinovich and Jeanne Shaheen reaffirmed the commitment of the United States of America to keep on supporting Kosovo and its aspiration for integration into the Euro-Atlantic institutions.
