President Thaçi: Time to celebrate, but also to focus on our responsibilities

President of the Republic of Kosovo, Hashim Thaçi welcomed today the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini.

President Thaçi thanked the EU representative for her visit right after the recommendation for visa liberalization. He said that together we are here today to convey clear messages of Kosovo’s European responsibilities.

“It is a new momentum for Kosovo at this time when we have overcome unpleasant political situations. Now we have stability, a normal functioning of institutions and, of course, after the entry into force of the Stabilisation Association Agreement, we will assume responsibility also with regards to the recommendation for visa liberalization. We are happy that we are finally, officially part of the European political geography”, President Thaçi said.

He stressed that Kosovo has achieved enormous progress and that efforts of the domestic institutions, along with the EULEX, in the fight against corruption and organized crime have been important criteria for European Commission’s recommendation for visa liberalization.

“Now we can celebrate, but we must also focus on our responsibilities. We are aware that we must do more and we will do more”, President Thaçi added.

Meanwhile, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini said that this is a really happy week, but that now is the time not only to celebrate, but also to look ahead.

“It was very important for me to have this meeting with the President, because this is the moment when Kosovo needs to unite around the European agenda. When the country stands united around its institutional responsibilities, the citizens benefit from the outcome”, Mogherini said, adding that she believes that during her term “we will see some relevant positive steps by the Western Balkan countries towards the EU, and that includes Kosovo”.

The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini said that implementation of all agreements with Serbia is also very important for the EU.

As for normalization of relations with Serbia, President Thaçi said that we have lots of work lying ahead, but that prerequisites are the implementation of all agreements reached so far and also the responsibilities arising from the decision of the Constitutional Court, which obliges Kosovo institutions to establish the Association of Serb-majority municipalities.
