President Thaçi: The new highway, “Arbën Xhaferi”, makes Kosovo more European

Prishtina, May 20th, 2016 – The President of the Republic of Kosovo, Hashim Thaçi has closely monitored, today, works underway on the new Prishtina-Hani i Elezit highway conducted according to the plan put forward earlier by the Government of Kosovo.

President Thaçi, accompanied by Minister of Infrastructure, Lutfi Zharku, said that modern projects such as the “Arbën Xhaferi” highway give a more modern meaning to the modern state of Kosovo.

“Projects such as Prishtina-Hani i Elezit “Arbën Xhaferi” highway make Kosovo a more modern, more European country, especially after the entry into force of the Stabilization and Association Agreement, the recommendation for visa liberalization, membership in UEFA and FIFA, and in the wake of the messages of the US Congress which has called the US administration to prepare Kosovo for NATO’s Partnership for Peace programme”, President Thaçi said.

The head of state said that there was never lack of institutional care for the works that are underway on the highway to continued according to the planned agenda, both in terms of financial support or professional supervision.

He said that now growing responsibilities lie ahead for the domestic institutions, to work even harder to change Kosovo, adding that the continuation of this project is the best example of Kosovo’s improvement.

President Thaçi said that we are building a new Kosovo, a European Kosovo, with economic development and creation of new jobs, as well as with increased welfare of citizens.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Infrastructure in the Government of Kosovo, Lutfi Zharku said that the works are being carried out as planned and that he expects that the Lipjan junction will be inaugurated in July, whereas the one in the village of Babush crossroad by the end of year.

Zharku said that under this project, the works for the construction of the highway are expected to be completed in January 2018.

He added that the financial implications do no represent a problem for the completion of the highway project because, as part of the medium-term framework, 110 million euros have been allocated for this year, adding that he believes that with the budget review the amount for next year will increase to another 150 million euros.

President of the Republic of Kosovo, Hashim Thaçi concluded that the country has become a crossroads for the entire region, with its modern infrastructure of European standards, in terms of highways, in the construction of roads in regional, local and rural areas.
