President Thaçi: The European perspective is not a mere statement any longer, it is a contract with the European Union

The President of the Republic of Kosovo, Hashim Thaçi participated today in the opening of the Conference on the Stabilisation and Association Agreement (SAA) between the European Union and the Republic of Kosovo, which was dedicated to the new opportunities this agreement brings for economic development.

President Thaçi said that this is a European year for Kosovo and that the EU membership remains country’s strategic priority.

“The state of Kosovo embodies European values and the European Union is not complete without Kosovo. We are Europe, we are no longer an isolated country”, President Thaçi said.

He said that with the entry into force of the SAA and the recommendation for visa liberalization, Kosovo’s European perspective is not a mere statement any longer, but it is a contract.

“Stabilisation and Association Agreement is an agreement for the future of our country. With this message today we all stand united, without any distinction. It presents an opportunity for economic development and creation of new jobs, because it expands trade relations between the EU and Kosovo with the gradual establishment of a free trade zone”, President Thaçi said, adding that the SAA will also contribute to a growing confidence of foreign investors as it provides a more predictable environment for doing business.

President Thaçi said that besides the economic aspect the SAA gives importance to regional cooperation and, in this respect, our position as a state is clear.

“We are focused on long-term cooperation and dialogue, as well as the benefits for all countries in our region”, President Thaçi added.

He  also added that cooperation between public institutions and civil society must be further strengthened.

“Civil society must be part of the implementation of the SAA”, President Thaçi said.
The head of state said that with our work we should enhance the trust of citizens in our state.

The conference on the Stabilisation and Association Agreement between the EU and Kosovo was also attended by the European Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighborhood Policy, Johannes Hahn, the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Isa Mustafa, Minister of European Integration, Bekim Çollaku, and the President of the European Investors Council, Emmanuel Mitsou.

Various analyses and studies pertaining to economic reform, trade and investment in Kosovo will be presented during the conference which aims to support the implementation of the SAA.
