President Thaçi: The Balkan must be a strategic interest for the EU, not a technical process

Thursday, December 22, 2016 – The President of the Republic of Kosovo, Hashim Thaçi, met today with the new Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Italy, Angelino Alfano.

President Thaçi thanked Minister Alfano for his first official visit in Kosovo and for the continued support of the Italian government.

President Thaçi stressed that Kosovo has achieved great successes in the internal and external consolidation of its statehood, mentioning the entry into force of the SAA as the best confirmation of these successes.

“Now we are working for our future in NATO and the EU”, said President Thaçi.

The Italian Foreign Minister, Angelino Alfano, referring to the process of the European integration of Kosovo, stressed that peace can only be achieved through European values.

“You are developing an approximation process with the European Union during its most difficult moments”, said Italian Foreign Minister, Angelino Alfano.

President Thaçi stressed that Brussels should see the Balkan states as a strategic interest and not as technical integration processes.

“We share European values and we are European, but Brussels is being late for us, as is the case with the visa liberalization for our citizens”, said President Thaçi.

According to him, You can request everything from the European Union, but you can not ask for speed, especially now when it is most needed, because anti-europeanism, extremism and radicalism are growing with much bigger steps.

“We have political and popular consensus against every extremism and radicalism, but also for embracing Euro-Atlantic values”, said President Thaçi.
