President Thaçi asks for the society’s support for the survivors of sexual violence

Prishtina, June 19th 2018 – President of the Republic of Kosovo, Hashim Thaçi, attended today the launch of the “Be my voice” campaign, in support of the survivors of the sexual violence during the war in Kosovo.

President Thaci said that today is the International Day for the elimination of the Sexual Violence in Conflict, which aims to attract the attention of societies and democratic states to this phenomenon which prevents peace building.

“We are aware of all the crimes which Serbia has committed in Kosovo, and will sooner or later be held accountable for those crimes. They tried in all manners to strip us off all human values, even using the sexual violence as an inhuman war tactic. They tried to ill-treat us. To even shame us to exclusion and self-isolation. But let us be clear: survivors of sexual violence are not guilty for what happened to them. They are the victims. They are survivors, who more than anyone are in need for the support by our society” said President Thaçi.

He also read a fragment from a testimony given by one of the survivors of sexual violence.

Even though Kosovo is known for activities taken to increase the public awareness, the head of state said that we must do more to end the sexual violence in conflicts.

“We need to do more to support the survivors, by making them regain their faith in themselves. We must heal their wounds together.  Their honour and dignity must be regained through trust in strength and belief. They need to have a future” said President Thaçi.

The head of state also expressed his appreciation to the Kosovo Centre for the Rehabilitation of Victims on their engagements, but also to other organisations which, through their incessant work, have fought the prejudice which prevail in our societies towards this sensitive social group.

President Thaci said that this can be achieved only through us becoming their voice too.
