President Pacolli receives the Head of the OSCE Mission in Kosovo Werner Almhofer

“OSCE has played a very important role in the democratisation of our country”, the President of the Republic of Kosovo Behgjet Pacolli said during a meeting with the Head of the OSCE Mission in Kosovo Mr. Werner Almhofer.

“The OSCE” – he said – “has done important things for our country, by providing a valuable assistance in building democratic institutions.

President Pacolli asserted that institutions and people of Kosovo aim at a speedy integration into the Euro-Atlantic institutions. “We aim at entering Europe and, to achieve this, we must be fully-fledged in every field” – he said.

In this regard, he stressed that Kosovo was in need of reforms in several fields, justice being one of the most important. President Pacolli said institutions of our country should find a way out of the situation i.e. the backlog of pending files that the judiciary was facing currently. He said a solution might be found by engaging new lawyers who have finished their studies and could not find jobs yet, by training them and assigning them to assist judges and prosecutors in dealing with a large number of pending files with respective courts.

President Pacolli also emphasised the need for amending the Law on Elections, reiterating that the President should be elected by people’s votes. He said OSCE could provide its advice in that regard.

The Head of the OSCE Mission in Kosovo Mr. Werner Almhofer reaffirmed the readiness of the organisation he leaded to provide its assistance wherever it was required.

He said that the OSCE mission had been present for 12 years in Kosovo now and that the organisation was present in other countries of the region as well.

Mr. Almhofer emphasised that OSCE assistance consisted in bringing these countries – including Kosovo – closer to the European Union, in fostering a real democracy and rule of law and in creating a favourable environment for foreign investments.

“OSCE is now here to assist only, to provide support, and the main task remains in your hands”, the Head of the OSCE Mission in Kosovo Mr. Werner Almhofer said.
