President Atifete Jahjaga met with the President of Finland, Madam Tarja Halonen

Vilnius, June 30, 2011 – The President of the Republic of Kosovo, Mrs. Atifete Jahjaga, held today an official meeting, in the margins of the conference which is being held in Vilnius, Lithuania, with the President of Finland, Tarja Halonen.

The Presidents of both countries discussed about the mutual cooperation between Kosovo and Finland and the strengthening of relations between them.

The President of Finland, Mrs. Tarja Halonen, said that her country has supported Kosovo and will continue to help it on its way to European integration. She said that the EU is committed that the entire Balkan becomes part of the European family, through the fulfillment of the standards set, which are important for EU membership.

President Halonen said that the building of good neighborly relations in the Balkans is important for the European integration path.

The President of the Republic of Kosovo, Mrs. Atifete Jahjaga, appreciated the help and contribution that Finland has given and continues to give to Kosovo. She informed the Finnish President about the initiative to establish the group “Friends of Kosovo”, which will also include former Finnish President Martti Ahtisaari. This group will help to present Kosovo to the world.

President Jahjaga said that new recognitions of Kosovo will help it on its path towards integration and the recognition of the five EU countries that have not yet recognized Kosovo would be of particular importance to achive this goal. She said that the contractual agreement with the EU would accelerate internal reforms and pave the European perspective for Kosovo. President Jahjaga said that the EU should open up opportunities for the citizens of Kosovo, offering the country the roadmap on visa liberalization.

She said that dialogue with the Republic of Serbia must be successful and that the solutions must be European, which will help both countries on their path towards European integration simultaneously.
